Kelly-Hill Company hosted safety training with KCP&L and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on Thursday, December 28. Safety is always at top of mind for our employees in everything we do. This is why we start each day with a safety briefing, participate in industry safety training, and host special safety trainings like this one. You always need to think safety when working on or near railroad tracks.

Since 1955, Kelly-Hill Company has been committed to the best safety practices and standards. Annually, Kelly-Hill dedicates a minimum of two days of safety training for all workers as part of our company-generated training program. In 2017, we welcomed training instructors from the Federal Railroad Administration, Kansas City Power and Light, and the Midwest Builders Casualty Group.

We are proud to review our 2017 safety record as we prepare to enter 2018.

  • 2017 OSHA Recordable Incidents: 0
  • Company Vehicle Accident Score: 0.67
  • Company Safety Briefings: 650-900 January 1st-September 30th

Additionally, Kelly-Hill uses NRC Toolbox Topics, which are discussed weekly during operations meetings. Topics range from Physical Environment and Tools & Equipment to Electrical Safety, and help to maintain strict safety standards in our daily operations.

Kelly-Hill Company completed some rehabilitation work on the Kansas City Zoo train tracks, which carries patrons on a train throughout the Zoo property. The project included removing and replacing approximately 330 linear feet of 20# curve rail on the high side of the track. We manually lined and leveled the tracks in this area and on 520 track feet at a secondary location. Lining and leveling ensures a safe and smooth ride.

Kelly-Hill Company just completed the balance of the track construction for a UPRR transload facility in Odessa, Texas. We have been working on this project over the past nine months. The final project encompassed more than 30,000 track feet of new construction on both wood and steel ties, along with the construction and installation of 12 various sized turnouts. We recorded a perfect safety record on this project and completed all the milestones ahead of expectations. Alberto Soto was our primary foreman on the project, leading the Kelly-Hill gangs and ensuring the project was executed in a timely, efficient and safe manner.

These types of projects are in our “sweet spot.” We really enjoy working in various parts of the Midwest and Southwest on similar projects.

Here are a few pictures from the project:

Tim Rock, COO, Kelly-Hill 3-6-15.JPGThis month, we were honored with our second safety award in 2015. We pride ourselves on our commitment to safety and these awards are a testament to that. In January, we received the Platinum Level 2014 Contractor Safety Award by the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association. This month, we were awarded this year’s First Place in the Subcontractor Division award by the Builder’s Association Safety Excellence Program.

Safety is extremely important to us. We do many things to ensure we’re implementing tried and true safety practices, as well as updates to those practices. There are dedicated training sessions, daily safety meetings, tool box talks; this has fostered long-term pride our employees take in embracing safe practices in everything we do. We’re excited to be recognized as an organization for our safety practices, which is only possible with our employees’ commitment to safety.

In business, we’re always learning; always analyzing to make ourselves and our companies better. Recently Kelly-Hill Company has been recognized with awards that highlight our safety commitment and reputation. To reach such accolades, we put safety and the knowledge of how to be safe at the top of mind. In looking at the safety statistics of our industry overall, the statistics are fairly positive, but we can always do better. Just because Kelly-Hill has won safety awards doesn’t mean we stop keeping safety at the top of each and every one of our employee’s mind on a day-to-day basis.
