This month, the Kansas City Industrial Council (KCIC) awarded the KCT Railway team a Brick-by-Brick award at their annual reception, this year held at Boulevard Brewery. The awards recognize contributions to improving the economy in Kansas City’s industrial areas using the following considerations: capital improvement, job creation, improved infrastructure, or relocation or expansion. The improved infrastructure project, known as “Incline,” was completed on KCT Railway property in partnership with the City of Kansas City, MO. The team included us, retaining wall contractor Clarkson Construction, and designer TranSystems. The Incline project replaced a failing retaining wall, improved drainage to alleviate flooding in the West Bottoms and relocated 3,000 track feet on two adjacent freight rail main lines. Congrats to the team!

Tim Rock, COO, Kelly-Hill 3-6-15.JPGThis month, we were honored with our second safety award in 2015. We pride ourselves on our commitment to safety and these awards are a testament to that. In January, we received the Platinum Level 2014 Contractor Safety Award by the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association. This month, we were awarded this year’s First Place in the Subcontractor Division award by the Builder’s Association Safety Excellence Program.

Safety is extremely important to us. We do many things to ensure we’re implementing tried and true safety practices, as well as updates to those practices. There are dedicated training sessions, daily safety meetings, tool box talks; this has fostered long-term pride our employees take in embracing safe practices in everything we do. We’re excited to be recognized as an organization for our safety practices, which is only possible with our employees’ commitment to safety.

We’re starting the year off right with another safety excellence award, this time from The Builders’ Association. We were honored with two awards last week: first place winner in the Subcontractor Division for 50,001-150,000 work hours, as well as the Grand Award Winner for all Divisions for best overall safety program. The awards represent The Builders’ Association, Missouri Department of Labor Standards, Kansas Department of Labor, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Kansas City Office.

Kelly-Hill Company received these awards due to our “common sense” approach to safety, going more than five years and three months without a reportable incident. We are able to build on this sterling record by having dedicated training sessions, daily safety meetings, tool box talks and simply the pride of all our employees in being safe. We average more than 135,000 production hours each year!

This is the second and third safety awards we’ve won this year. We were recognized by NRC in January as a Gold Level Safety Organization.

The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) has announced Kelly-Hill Company as a Category II Gold NRC 2013 Safety Award Winner. This award represents the extensive efforts made to promote and improve safety in the rail industry. Scoring was objective and required judges to review Kelly-Hill Company’s full safety program and practices with a full extensive outside review. The award will be accepted next week (January 5–8, 2014) at the NRC Conference held at the JW Marriott Desert Springs in Palm Desert, CA.

2013 National Railroad Construction Safety AwardThe criteria for the NRC 2013 Safety Award was divided into four categories, based on the average number of employees. Each category was scored on workers’ compensation experience, OSHA work-related injuries and illnesses, OSHA statistics violations, roadway worker protection training, and safety program elements. Point totals of each category determined a Winner (highest point total), Gold (80% or more points), Silver (70%–79% points), or Bronze (60%–69%).

Kelly-Hill Company takes prides in their safety program and the practices that follow. To receive the Gold Award in Category II indicates that Kelly-Hill Company is following national standards to continuously keep their personnel safe while constructing railroad infrastructure.
