Last week, we attended the railway engineering industry’s largest conference: AREMA. Kelly-Hill
Company supported this conference as a silver sponsor. It was great to see the industry’s leaders and up-and-coming engineers all in one place to discuss current topics, learn what’s new, and where the industry is headed. Next year AREMA will partner with other railway organizations to co-host the Railway Interchange conference in Minneapolis in 2015. We look forward to seeing everyone there again next year. If we missed you at this year’s conference, email trock@kellyhillco.com.
2014
This month, Kelly-Hill Company was in St. Louis working for the St. Louis Bridge Company on the historic Eads Bridge. Owned by St. Louis Metro, this 140-year-old bridge carries four highway lanes and two transit track connecting travelers from Missouri to Illinois. The 6,442-foot arch bridge was the first bridge built exclusively using cantilever support methods.
As with any structure, especially an historic one, maintenance is required to keep it in working order for traveler use. Kelly-Hill Company was contracted to replace bridge timbers and install a new walkway deck.
In business, we’re always learning; always analyzing to make ourselves and our companies better. Recently Kelly-Hill Company has been recognized with awards that highlight our safety commitment and reputation. To reach such accolades, we put safety and the knowledge of how to be safe at the top of mind. In looking at the safety statistics of our industry overall, the statistics are fairly positive, but we can always do better. Just because Kelly-Hill has won safety awards doesn’t mean we stop keeping safety at the top of each and every one of our employee’s mind on a day-to-day basis.
Kelly-Hill created this infographic compiling statistics about the safety of our industry:
We’re starting the year off right with another safety excellence award, this time from The Builders’ Association. We were honored with two awards last week: first place winner in the Subcontractor Division for 50,001-150,000 work hours, as well as the Grand Award Winner for all Divisions for best overall safety program. The awards represent The Builders’ Association, Missouri Department of Labor Standards, Kansas Department of Labor, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Kansas City Office.
Kelly-Hill Company received these awards due to our “common sense” approach to safety, going more than five years and three months without a reportable incident. We are able to build on this sterling record by having dedicated training sessions, daily safety meetings, tool box talks and simply the pride of all our employees in being safe. We average more than 135,000 production hours each year!
This is the second and third safety awards we’ve won this year. We were recognized by NRC in January as a Gold Level Safety Organization.
